Water supply: High water quality thanks to polyethylene
High water quality is crucial in order to comply with regulations from the Potable Water Ordinance and the EU Potable Water Directive. The water network must be stable, safe and hygienic. In Germany alone, the water network comprises piping systems with a length of 544,000 km. Network operators, municipal utilities and decision makers in the water supply sector are required to meet the hygiene requirements in network operation and to ensure the longevity of the pipes by selecting suitable components - thus guaranteeing a reliable water distribution system and a hygienic potable water supply.
How to achieve hygiene in the potable water network
When untreated water - whether groundwater, surface water or rainwater - is treated in waterworks to produce potable water, the hygienic safety of the water must be achieved. However, the further transportation in the water network and the water pipes used are also crucial: the durability and high hygienic standards of plastic pipes, shut-off valves, pressure tapping valves, couplers, fittings and flanges are essential here. Sediments on the inner walls of conventional materials can quickly lead to germ-forming microorganisms. The solution: polyethylene.
At Aliaxis Germany, we use PE 100 - a high-tech material made from thermoplastic polyethylene - for our products such as pipes, fittings and molded parts. This crack-resistant material is particularly hygienic and resource-efficient.
Crack-resistant water pipes made of polyethylene
Polyethylene is suitable for preventing sediments, as the material ensures a smooth inner wall. This ensures hygiene in the water network - because large-scale sediments on the inner walls of the pipe systems and the associated germ-forming microorganisms cannot form in the first place. Instead of extensive incrustations, only a fine biofilm forms in the water pipes. This means that the main cause of hygiene risks in the water supply - large, unstable sediments that become detached - is largely eliminated. The water pipes are also particularly sustainable, robust and durable.
Legally compliant: PE 100 and the Potable Water Ordinance
Hygiene regulations must also be complied with in terms of legislation. All components used in PE 100 are tested and evaluated for use with potable water, gas and hydrogen in accordance with the relevant standards and test specifications.
The advantages of polyethylene in water supply at a glance:
-
Sustainable: expected service life of up to 100 years
-
Durable: exposed heating coils for homogeneous, durable and secure connections
-
Hygienic: prevention of sediments and incrustations
-
Legally compliant: PE 100 components tested in accordance with the Potable Water Ordinance
